Dräger firefighter breathing system Travox 120
A very compact and lightly designed system
The Travox 120 oxygen breathing valve was produced by the German company Drägerwerk AG between 1961 and 1989. It is designed for use in non-breathing environments, for example in fire protection with a closed breathing circuit with a protection time of 120 minutes. It has three independent oxygen supply systems, constant, automatic and manual with an additional valve.
Because of its unique design (small weight and small size, placement of the main components, concept of the regulator valve and the lung regulator), it was easily converted into an underwater rebreather by several enthusiasts at home and abroad. The uniqueness of the design was mainly the replacement of the disposable CO2 absorber (formerly used in similar devices) with an absorber in which the filling was lime-based only (e.g., Sofnolime). However, diving with an oxygen device not designed for underwater use can be very dangerous; therefore, the modification should only be carried out by persons with appropriate technical skills and well versed in the use of such devices underwater.
Composition of the Travox:
1. breathing hose with central connection and saliva trap
2. inhalation and exhalation chamber with directional valves
3. Automatic dosing device with overpressure valve and warning signal
4. Counterlung
5. Scrubber
6. Reducing valve with manual additional valve and automatic flushing
7. Oxygen cylinder with shut-off valve
8. Pressure gauge with line and shut-off valve
9. Two-piece instrument housing with tension straps

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
