Tom Rose Swampfox and adapted RG/UFM

If you’d met this man in a cafe and you’re a diver, I guarantee he can keep you busy till late. Tom Rose is CEDU Award winner with his unique rebreather “SWAMP FOX”. Unfortunately Tom passed away a few years ago. The pioneer was a member of the American Cedu (Crestline Experimental Diving Unit), an organization that tries to build rebreathers with as few resources as possible. Tom Rose was a true pioneer in producing simple closed breathing systems. The American Cousteau has been diving since 1961 (my year of birth) and has improved an endless range of diving products and re-designed them. For example, one of the first fully rebuilt RG-UF/M tankrebreather can be admired on his (former) site. Enclosures, electronics, flow meters you name it, worth reading. Tom’s homepage could be found at http://www.atlimp.com but is unfortunately no longer in the air. However, you can still read about the adventures of CEDU on http://cedu-diver.com/CCO2.htm.

Tom Rose RG/UF-M

Tom’s completely rebuilt RG-UF/M rebreather from the former German Eastern Bloc. The rebreather was originally used in amphibious tanks and came on the market in large numbers at the end of the 1990s after the fall of the German wall.

Tom was a great lover of the island of Roatan near Honduras. Here he dives in his beloved environment. https://goo.gl/maps/kLorfjcfZ6va2A9F6

The Ultimate Simplicity;

“THE SWAMPFOX”

In fact a 3-piece rebreather, a contralong, a scrubber and an oxygen tank. Unique is the nose breathing system which was also used in the mining industry around 1900. Advantage is that on the surface mouth breathing was immediately available.

The complete Swampfox. The scrubber is made of a Thermos, the contralong of a hot water bag and a simple oxygen bottle makes the set complete. Oxygen is added by opening the valve. Once the counter lung is filled, the oxygen can be used up until new oxygen is needed.

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
