The secret oxygen rebreather of S’13

Israel’s Special forces have a long history with ups and downs. The link below refers to a page (Portuguese) where much information can be found about the history of the Shayetet 13 also called s’13. The elite team of the Israel Defense Forces was founded in 1948 and is still active today. The underwater missions carried out by Yaltam are often conducted with open circuit diving systems. Shayetet 13 also uses a dedicated diving device called Compact Oxy.

The very compact 6 kg device was developed by the Technical Equipment International Ltd now housed by the Karil Group which is part of the defense group Mistral. The rebreather has a very special design and is exceptionally streamlined and has a low acoustic and magnetic signature. With a size of 400 x 300 x 130 mm and 1.2 kg absorbent, a dive time of about 100 min is achieved. With the 5 ltr counterlung this oxygen rebreather forms a very special unit which as far as is known is only used by the Israeli special forces.

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
