Alexander Berger SCR conversion

Alexander rebuild his Dolphin to new standards

So here is another episode to add to the Homebuilders section. Rebreathers are starting to be more slim and streamlined. Also the comfort of the unit is high on the wish list of the builder. These wishes are resulting in very nice units! One of the examples is Alexander Berger’s semi closed rebreather. Although not completely homebuilt, his ideas and realization of his rebreather project could be well appreciated!

Here are the highlights of his unit:

Information:

  • Semi Closet Rebreather based on Dräger Dolphin techniques.
  • The housing offers place for tanks up to 2 x 4 liters
  • Tanks can be connected via the integrated manifold. In this case you can use 2 gases. Gases can be changed underwater.
  • It’s also possible to connect the inflator tubes of your dry suit, and wing to this manifold. There’s also a port for the bailout second stage.
  • The SCR can be attached to a back plate or a BCD.
  • You can use the original Dräger first stages as well as Apeks DS4.

Advantages compared to Dräger Dolphin

  • Much more clearly arranged.
  • Provides more options.
  • More gas (up to 8 liters).
  • 2 gases.
  • Gases can be changed underwater.
  • Integrated  bailout system, which always provides the current gas.
  • Much more solid housing.
  • Integrated manifold
  • Optimised tube guiding.

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
