Dr. Finney ECCR 1956

Thanks to Richard Walsby and the kind cooperation of Dr. Finney I am very pleased to show you the Finney rebreather. It was not the original name but I thought it was appropriate to give the unit his inventor’s name. Dr. Finney was kind enough to help us with information that could not be found in the patent. Now here you find the article Richard Walsby wrote and published in HDT. This publication with the kind permission of Peter Dick of the HDS

Dr. Finney working on the ECCR in 1956

I would like to thank Richard Walsby and Peter Dick for giving me the opportunity to publish this article here. It is exceptional to be able to document this extraordinary history of the development of electronically controlled rebreathers. In particular, the pioneers who brought the original ideas to a working system are often quickly forgotten. All honour to Dr Finney.

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
