1912 Westfalia Tauchretter

Database German Oxygen rebreathers

In 1912 Westfalia build their first Lifesaving Jacket Tauchretter. Maschinenfabrik  Westfalia  AG (Aktien-Gesellschaft) was formaly trading
under Armaturen en Maschinenfabrik Westfalia. The company was merged with Sauerstoff Fabrik Berlin in 1905. (Giersberg).
The unit consists of a steel cilinder with connecting tubes. Airbags provided flotation when seaman escaped a submarine.
For this purpose Westfalia provided a special device that enabled the counterlung to be inflated instandly when high ambient pressures worked on the outer lung.
The device was equipped with a bypass pressure regulator that acts on the external waterpressure on the membrane. When the seaman escaped a submarine a high external
pressure would press the membrane and by this way adding a large volume of oxygen to the counterlung. By this way the drowner would be able to breath instantly.

Westfalia was a serious competitor of Draeger in these days. This can be read in the thetis of M.Seydel of 2010:
University of Lübeck Germany;

Beside the Dräger devices, the Kaiserliche Marine also bought Tauchretter from the Westfalia Company.
The Westfalia company was,– also active in the Respiratory protection business.
fter a series of tests and subsequent modifications to the Westfalia diving rescuer,
the Command of the U-boat Recovery Shooting Vulcan in May 1913 concluded that the
Tauchretter of the company Westfalia is equal to the Dräger-Tauchretter.
Drägerwerk criticized the decision of the Navy to also buy dive rescuers from Westfalia.
It tried to get the Reichsmarineamt to achieve an exclusive right of representation for the dive rescuers.
It was argued, that Westfalia had only copied the diving rescuer and thus deprived Drägerwerk of the success of its
construction services. In addition, the quality of the Westfalia diving rescuer is lower.
A further problem is that the Dräger and Westfalia diving rescuers have different
alkaline cartridges would have to be carried. There have also been threats to shift the
focus of developments activities in other areas. A direct response from the Marine
was not received.

Therebreathersite was founded by Jan Willem Bech in 1999. After a diving career of many years, he decided to start technical diving in 1999. He immediately noticed that at that time there was almost no website that contained the history of closed breathing systems. The start for the website led to a huge collection that offered about 1,300 pages of information until 2019. In 2019, a fresh start was made with the website now freely available online for everyone. Therebreathersite is a source of information for divers, researchers, technicians and students. I hope you enjoy browsing the content!
