The strange-looking suit shown in the figures was invented by William Carey, of Southampton. It shows a plate suit, with ball-and-socket joints, but provision is made for easing the action of the joints by mounting them on ball or roller bearings. It is specifically stated that the interior of the dress is to be maintained at atmospheric pressure, but no particulars are given of either the air supply or the packing of the joints.
William Carey was a colonel of the Royal Artillery. He did not offer a working model when he obtained his patent.
